What happens after your application
We'll check your application and may ask for more details, this might include missing evidence to support your application.
Current processing dates
As of 30 April 2025, we are currently working on applications received on or before 18 February 2025.
Do not contact us if you have applied after this date.
When does it start
Council Tax Reduction usually starts from the Monday after we receive your application.
You can ask for your application to be backdated, up to 6 months. You'll need to provide a reason for your request. If you have not asked for this in your application, you can also:
Email: benctax@fife.gov.uk
Write to:
Benefits & Council Tax Team
PO Box 18015
Bankhead Central
Glenrothes
KY7 6GH
If you have reached State Pension age, your application will be automatically backdated for a maximum of 3 months, as long as you were paying Council Tax during this time.
Once the decision is made
If we decide that you're not entitled to Council Tax Reduction, we will write to you and explain the reasons why.
If you have been awarded Council Tax Reduction, you'll receive a revised bill only. Your new bill will be available to view, if you have an online account.
You can contact us via email benctax@fife.gov.uk if:
- the reduction is less than you expect and you would like an explanation.
- you disagree with the decision we have made.
