Whether you live, work or are just visiting or passing through Fife, we in Fife Council can provide you with advice and information to help you and your community, or your business, to prepare for and respond to incidents affecting Fife communities.
Why should I get ready, and what should I be ready for?
Don’t panic! Incidents don’t happen very often, but it’s still a good idea to think about what you would do if one affects you, your family or your community. We advise that you make sure you are prepared for any kind of incident, it could be an emergency, such as an evacuation from your home, or a forecasted incident, such as severe weather.
These kinds of incidents can disrupt our daily lives. Whilst we can’t always stop them from happening, we can plan ahead to minimise the impact.
The following pages outline simple steps you can take to prepare for any incident.
Don’t wait for the unexpected to happen – prepare now! Once you are prepared – encourage your friends and neighbours to be too! A few minutes thinking about it now could make a big difference in keeping you and your family safe.
What to do in an incident
Stay calm and don’t panic! The chances of you and your family being caught up in an emergency or incident are small but, just in case it should ever happen…
If you should ever find yourself in an emergency, your common sense combined with your natural instincts will, more often than not, tell you what to do. Even so, the following actions should be your priorities:
Call 999 in the event of injuries or if a threat to life exists.
- Never put yourself or others in any danger
- Listen to the advice from the emergency services
- Try to stay calm and think before you act
- If you can, try to reassure others
- Remember to check yourself for injuries before attempting to assist others
If an incident occurs and you need to stay in your home - Go in, stay in, tune in!
- Go inside a ‘safe’ building
- Stay inside until advised to do otherwise
- Tune in to local radio or television for more Information
