Making changes to Listed Buildings

Alterations to a listed building must preserve its character. To alter, extend, or demolish a Listed Building, you must apply for Listed Building Consent from Fife Council. You may also need to apply for planning permission and a building warrant but a building warrant alone does not grant permission without Listed Building Consent.

Repairs and Maintenance

If you are proposing to carry out repairs or maintenance to a Listed Building, you must ensure that the proposals preserve the character of the building or structure. For guidance, visit the Historic Environment Scotland website.

Listed Building Consent is likely to be required for larger repairs such as replacing slates or gutters. Before starting any repairs or maintenance we recommend submitting a Pre-Application Enquiry or applying for Listed Building Consent to ensure compliance and avoid unauthorised work, which is an offence.
