Dunmore Nursery Extension
The original single-storey building housing Dunmore Nursery School opened in 1960, an extension was successfully delivered on time and within budget for the start of the new session in August 2020 allowing two-year-old & under children to be accommodated in two new playrooms.
Property Services provided initial Architectural outline scheme design as well as contract administration and full Clerk of works services throughout the project. This Nursery extension project was delivered by the Main Contractor Portakabin Scotland as a Design and Build turnkey solution.
Prefabricated elements of the building were put together under factory conditions at the main contractor’s site in York greatly increasing speed of construction with modular units delivered to site already containing windows, doors as well as many elements of the plumbing and electrical installation. This modern method of construction allows a high standard of finishes installed in factory conditions and the lightweight construction helps reduce loads on ground conditions.
The extension has its own entrance separating age groups as well as an internal link connection back to the existing building. The link enables all areas to be under one roof and improves access for children, wheelchair users and staff. An accessible toilet is housed in the extension along with ancillary toilets and facilities to the playrooms. Both playrooms have a north facing aspect with direct unhindered access to their secure garden and external play space.
The Nursery is now open from 8am until 6pm, running 52 weeks a year providing the facilities to deliver a nursery curriculum and support the development of parenting activities and skills.
Despite severe restrictions due to pandemic milestones were met, and the project was completed successfully on time and to budget.
