Animal welfare establishments

The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (Scotland) Regulations 2021

This legislation came into effect on 1st September 2021. If you operate an animal welfare establishment, you will require a licence.

We will grant you a licence when we have:

  • received a completed application form
  • received the appropriate fee (please see attached publication for details of current fees)
  • completed a satisfactory inspection of the premises

There is a fee for the licence, and it varies depending on the number of animals you have and any vet costs we may incur as part of the inspection. In the event you do not meet the licence conditions, and/or decide not to go ahead, licence fees are non-refundable.

A licence may be granted or renewed for a period of 1, 2 or 3 years depending on the outcome of the inspection from the date that it is granted.
