Canongate Primary school was built in 1972. It is situated in extensive grounds off the Canongate beside the Botanical Gardens. It is a co-educational, non denominational school and one of three council primary schools in St Andrews.
The school building has 12 classrooms, multi-purpose hall, music room and office accommodation. A nursery class is set within the infant department in two classrooms and an outside play area. A classroom is designated for pupils who have complex additional support needs. A controlled entry system operates on the main front and back entrance to the school. An outdoor netball / football pitch lies within the tarmac area and paved areas with bench seating surround the building. Grassed play areas are used whenever suitable. There is also an all-weather pitch which the older children can utilise.
Our aim is to provide a stimulating and challenging environment where each child can achieve his/her full potential taking into account the importance of partnership with parents and the wider community.
The Expressive Arts programme is enhanced by visits from Music, Drama, Art and P.E. specialists on a two year cycle. We also have a visiting teachers for pupils in P4-7 who are taught clarsach and double bass.
At present there is one Learning Support teacher, one classroom assistant and two support assistants.
Our Parent Forum is very active and organises a number of social activities throughout the session. Money raised is used to buy a variety of curricular materials and playground equipment. The Parent Forum meets regularly and also supports the school in its official capacity. The pupil council has members from every class within the school and meets regularly to discuss concerns and issues raised by pupils.
Extra curricular activities include: football, netball, tennis, rugby, music and Hip Hop. The school is fortunate to be located near the Lade Braes and West Sands and classes can make effective use of the local environment to support our curriculum.
We are pleased to meet with parents who wish to discuss any aspects of our school.
