Dear Parent
Canongate PS sits in a picturesque green site in the South West side of the town of St Andrews. We pride ourselves on our warm, welcoming ethos where we value and welcome the whole family. Due to the fact that we are in a university town which is also a centre for hospitality, we are very privileged to have families from Fife, Scotland, the UK and from various places across the world at all times. We feel this is exciting and fortunate for all our families and welcome everyone.
We value and recognise the important home, school partnership in achieving the best for all our learners. Staff and parents work together to offer a safe, motivating and nurturing environment for learning and for our wellbeing.
We encourage all children to have a voice in their learning and to have the opportunity to discuss and improve all aspects of school life. We have a strong focus on leadership across the school with all pupils in the upper school in specific leadership group roles and all children in the school having some responsibility for their classroom. Responsibilities include playground and peer mediation, sports leaders, digital leaders, curriculum supporters, buddying and other. We aim to get to know our children so we can identify barriers to learning quickly and offer tools and strategies to support independent learning or where appropriate use additional support where required.
We believe all children benefit from regular exercise and currently hold a Gold award from Sports Scotland for our commitment to this. We can use our school hall and grounds for sports. We work closely with Active Schools and our parent community to offer a range of sporting activities and extra curricular sports in order to raise activity levels. We have participated in festivals / workshops including tennis, football, rugby, basketball, netball, hockey, athletics and swimming. Our Sports leaders also run clubs for younger children. All Primary 7 pupils have the opportunity to attend a week residential trip at an Outdoor Education Centre.
We work hard to provide effective transitions at all stages. This may be coming into nursery, nursery to P1, class to class and moving to secondary education. We have close links with our education partners and make sure that there are opportunities to visit and prepare for moving on. The Madras Cluster provide a range of activities and festivals along with specific transition events.
Welcome to Canongate
