News from City of Dunfermline Area Committee

The City of Dunfermline Area Committee met this morning (Tuesday 19 August 2025). Here's a summary of the discussion and decisions.

Budget requests

Christmas Lights Switch-On - £25,000

The City of Dunfermline Area Committee has awarded £25,000 to this year’s Christmas Lights Switch-On.

Building on last year’s success, we'll be kicking off Dunfermline’s festive celebrations with another high-quality event on Sunday 16 November.  There will be a full-day programme of free, family-friendly activity designed to attract high footfall to the city centre; offering an inclusive, vibrant and fun experience for all.

The City of Dunfermline area convener, Cllr James Calder said: “We’re delighted to support this year’s Christmas Lights Switch-On with a £25,000 contribution. Last year’s event brought real energy and excitement to the city centre and we’re building on that success with another fantastic day of free, family-friendly activities.
“It’s a great way to bring our community together, support local businesses and kick off the festive season in style.”

Dunfermline Household Support Scheme - £10,000

The City of Dunfermline Area Committee agreed a contribution of £10,000 to continue the Dunfermline Household Support Scheme, run by Furniture Plus.

The scheme provides essential household items - furniture, appliances, white goods - to vulnerable individuals and families in Dunfermline to prevent crisis situations. The scheme works with key local groups and organisations on a referral basis.

Over the next year, Furniture Plus is expanding the reach of the scheme to 100 households, improving the referral process and increasing awareness.

Cllr Calder commented: “This funding will go a long way towards supporting the most vulnerable with their furniture needs.”

Tapped! Young People Project on Illegal Money Lending - £10,000

Area Committee agreed a contribution of £10,000 to support the creation of a video and educational toolkit aimed at raising awareness of illegal money lending.

The multi-agency project (Kingdom Community Bank, Fife Voluntary Action, Scottish Illegal Money Lending Unit, Fife Council and Dunfermline Media City) will work with young people in Dunfermline to produce a film and educational materials. This will highlight the dangers of loan sharks, with a focus on prevention and financial resilience.

Around 20-30 young people from Dunfermline will be directly involved in the project. The initial roll out of the video and materials in Dunfermline schools is expected to reach hundreds of young people and stimulate conversations with peers and family members. As part of a wider roll out across Fife and Scotland, it has the potential to reach an audience of thousands.

Cllr James Calder, in support of the funding decision, said: “I’m pleased we can support this vital project. By empowering young people to create a powerful film and educational toolkit, we’re not only raising awareness of the dangers of illegal money lending but also helping to build financial resilience in our communities.
“This is a fantastic example of partnership working that will have a lasting impact—not just in Dunfermline, but potentially across Fife and beyond.”

Traffic Regulation Orders

Committee approved the following Traffic Regulation Order proposals:

Townhill Road, Dunfermline - A raised crossing is planned for Townhill Road near Lauder Street to slow down traffic and make it easier for people crossing.

Kingseat Road, Dunfermline – To help tackle speeding on Kingseat Road, the committee has agreed to put in four sets of speed cushions.

Sandpiper Drive, Dunfermline – A new 30mph speed limit is being introduced on the dual carriageway section of Sandpiper Drive to help slow down traffic near nearby schools and Fife College.

Cllr James Calder stated: “These proposed Traffic Regulation Orders reflect our commitment to improving road safety and responding to the concerns raised by residents in our communities.”
