This Foster Care Fortnight, 12-25 May, Fife Council celebrated our foster carers, the long service many of them have done (some over 20 years!), and the relationships that make fostering so rewarding at our annual Fife Foster Carers Conference.
70 of the council’s carers attended the event with over 1,000 years’ experience of fostering between them.
27 foster carers and caring partners were recognised for achieving 5, 10, 15 or 20 years of fostering and making a difference in local Fife children’s lives by opening their homes and hearts. Certificates were handed out by Cllr Rosemary Liewald, who was amazed at the love our carers show all the time and thanked them all.
The conference also welcomed Fife’s new Family Based Care Service Manager Debbie Adamson, Katie Walker from Cyrenians, and the council’s Lead Officer for The Promise, Emma McKenna.
Fife Foster Carers Association (FFCA), made up of and run by local foster carers, also got to give a big hello to fellow carers and welcome them to join the group, get support, or have a moan.
Our foster carers also got to hear a little about the support groups Fife Council’s Fostering Team run, including the Men’s support group for male carers, New Carers Group, Permanence Support Group, and Teenage Support Group.
Debbie Adamson, Family Based Care Service Manager, said: "It is incredibly important that we recognise and thank our foster carers for their continued care, support and unwavering commitment to Fife’s children. It has been so good to see so many of our carers at our annual Foster Carer Conference during this year’s Foster Care Fortnight.
"The theme of the fortnight this year is 'The Power of Relationships,' particularly those relationships our foster carers build with children and their families. We all have a role to play in ensuring that our children are safe and supported to achieve their potential and ensure they maintain relationships with those people who are important to them. We need to continue to work together to achieve the best outcomes for our children and young people.
"Foster care does come with some challenges but is also incredibly rewarding, and we have heard some really positive stories from children, their families and carers of the important and positive impact of fostering on them.
"We would also like to thank Cllr Rosemary Liewald for supporting and attending this year’s conference and presenting some of our foster carers with certificates for long service to fostering."
