Fife Council welcomes start of work on Mountfleurie Bridge

Fife Council has marked a major milestone in its plans to better connect Levenmouth communities and regenerate the area as work starts on the £5.8m Mountfleurie Active Travel Bridge project.

The new 100m crossing, which will span the Levenmouth Rail Link between Kirkland and Mountfleurie, will provide a 4m wide safe, scenic and accessible route for walking, cycling and wheeling, and is due to be open by March 2026. What’s more, it’s a cornerstone of the wider Levenmouth Connectivity Project which is progressing well and is delivering new on-road and off-road shared use paths throughout the Levenmouth area.

Fife Council has led the planning and project design and is delivering the bridge after securing funding via the UK Government. The Council has commissioned Network Rail and its contractor to build the bridge.

Councillor Colin Davidson (pictured above left), convener of the Levenmouth Area Committee, said residents and visitors alike will notice a huge difference between now and next Spring.

“We’re delighted to see work starting on the Mountfleurie Bridge which is more than just a piece of infrastructure - it’s a vital link that will reconnect communities across Levenmouth and a key part of the wider active travel network,” he said.

“As work begins, we’re taking another significant step toward a more accessible, better-connected area where people can move more freely between neighbourhoods, schools, services, and of course the new rail link.

"I want to thank Fife Council's Roads and Transportation Services for leading this project and Estates staff for their hard work and diligence in delivering this project as it has been a complex and difficult process.

“This project is a real example of how local investment can open up new opportunities for everyone, and it goes without saying that we appreciate people’s forbearance while the construction work is carried out.

“This will help transform our area.”

It’s a welcome sight to see contractors on site and commencing the start of a busy seven-month construction period.

John Mitchell (pictured above right), Fife Council Head of Roads and Transportation Services, said: “This is a further step in helping to deliver the integrated sustainable transport network for Levenmouth which builds on the work to secure the new rail link and improve connectivity through improved bus services and active travel links.

“We really appreciate the patience of the local community while we undertake the works to deliver this key infrastructure which looks to help transform, better connect and regenerate Levenmouth.

“We look forward to welcoming the community to its opening in 2026.”
