Fife councillors at this week’s meeting of the Cabinet Committee, noted that no action will be taken to allow public access to the east dock of Burntisland harbour at this time.
Councillors also heard that Forth Ports acted lawfully in closing off the active harbour area.
Over recent months the council has supported both the community and Forth Ports in discussions to try and agree a resolution to the issue of public access to the site.
Fife Council's head of communities and corporate development Paul Vaughan said: "We appreciate the depth of local feeling around this issue and we have thoroughly assessed what involvement the council can and should have to help resolve the situation.
“We will continue to support any discussions between the landowners, Forth Ports and the local community."
Council Leader Cllr David Ross added: "Unfortunately this is an issue that the council cannot resolve. However we are happy to facilitate further discussions, and I would urge both the local community and Forth Ports to work together and reach a compromise that will work for everyone involved."
