As National Allotments Week gets underway (11–17 August), Fife Council is celebrating the vital role allotments and community growing spaces play in supporting health, wellbeing, and sustainability across the Kingdom.
This year’s theme, “Allotments and Wellbeing,” highlights how growing your own food and spending time outdoors can boost physical and mental health, build community connections, and support a more sustainable lifestyle.
Fife Council continues to deliver on its ambitious Allotment and Community Growing Strategy 2024–2029 where members recently approved funding of £320,000 in community grants and training. This investment is helping more people access land to grow their own food, learn new skills, and connect with their communities.
Cabinet members agreed the Allotments and Community Growing Strategy at its meeting of 8 February 2024 and an update report was provided at Cabinet on 1 May 2025, where a further detailed report was requested on resourcing requirements. At the meeting in June, members agreed to a new team being formed to support the delivery of the strategy and align with the wider Food4Fife action plan. The team will work alongside partners like NHS Fife, third sector organisations and local community groups to make growing spaces more accessible and sustainable.
Cllr Linda Erskine, Spokesperson for Communities, said:“Allotments and community growing spaces are about so much more than just growing food – they’re places where people come together, learn from each other, and build stronger, healthier communities. I’m proud of the investment we’re making to support this work and excited to see the difference it’s already making across Fife.”
To mark the week, Council officers have been visiting allotment and community growing sites across Fife – from long-established plots to new community-led projects. These visits will be showcased on the Council’s social media channels throughout the week, highlighting the passion and creativity of local growers.
