2025 saw Dunfermline participating in European Mobility Week for the third consecutive year where again there was a cordon placed around the city centre to count pedestrians and cyclists entering or leaving the area either on foot or by bicycle.
The same 12 sites as 2023 and 2024 were monitored with the following results being recorded:
- Cyclists = 13% increase on figures for the same period in 2024 (total 302 cyclists, Tuesday and Saturday Combined)
- Pedestrians = 1% decrease on figures for the same period in 2024 (total 32,946 pedestrians, Tuesday and Saturday combined)
The most popular site for walkers and wheelers was again Pilmuir Street with 11,235 passing through the cordon (2-day total). Bridge Street also proved to be popular with 7,670 pedestrians.
A new addition to European Mobility Week for 2025 was a trial of the Walk15 app.
Although tested on a small scale this year, it is hoped to increase promotion of this initiative next year and increase participation in the steps challenge.
Five hundred and seventy-seven teams from across the globe were formed and at the end of EMW on September 22, Dunfermline finished 112th in this fun challenge.
A massive well done to all who took part.
The cordon count will be repeated during European Mobility Week next year. In the meantime, the results will help with network planning.
Although it is too early to say decisively, the figures from the year-on-year surveys, are a positive indication that Fife Council is making good progress in promoting active and sustainable travel and helping to achieve the council's targets that are set out in the Local Transport Strategy.
Susan Keenlyside, Fife Council Service Manager - Sustainable Transport & Parking, said: “It’s encouraging to see Dunfermline continuing to embrace European Mobility Week and showing steady progress in active travel.
“The increase in cycling and strong pedestrian numbers reflect our community’s growing commitment to healthier, greener ways of getting around.
“These insights help us shape future transport planning and support our wider goals in the Local Transport Strategy.”
