Another major step on the way to a replacement Madras College was taken today as councillors agreed to the purchase of land from St Andrews University.

It is a major step towards the new school being built on land at Langlands and follows on from the completion of an access road off the A91.

Councillors today agreed to authorise the purchase of a site at Langlands, from the University of St Andrews and dispose of the South Street campus to University of St Andrews. The campus will be leased back from the University for a nominal rent until the new school is built.

The paper was put before full Council today, rather than wait for the Asset, Property and Facilities Committee in August, to avoid any delays in starting the construction.

Councillor Craig Walker, Convener of the Assets, Property and Facilities Committee, said: “This is quite a momentous day. We have been working with the University for some time to get to this point. A tremendous amount of work has gone on in the background to make sure that we are still on time to have a new school built for 2021.
