Condensation advice

Everyday activities such as cooking, showering and drying clothes create moisture in your home. When this warm moist air touches a cold surface, such as a window or wall, it turns into condensation.

What to do if you see condensation or mould in your home

  • wipe away condensation as soon as you see it using a dry cloth
  • if mould appears, clean it by wiping the area with a suitable fungicidal wash

Dealing with condensation early can help stop mould from coming back.

How to help prevent dampness, mould and condensation

We understand that keeping your home warm can be difficult, especially during winter when energy costs are high. Even small changes can help reduce moisture in the air.

How to produce less moisture

  • keep lids on pots and pans when cooking
  • dry clothes outdoors when possible, or use one room with the door closed
  • if you use a tumble dryer, make sure it is vented to the outside
  • Avoid using paraffin or flu-less bottles gas heaters

Ventilate to remove moisture

  • open windows for short periods each day, especially when someone is at home
  • use extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms when cooking or showering, and keep doors closed
  • allow air to circulate around wardrobes, cupboards and blocked chimneys

Short bursts of ventilation are often enough and do not significantly cool your home.

Heat your home as best you can

We understand that constant heating is not always affordable. Background heat combined with ventilation helps reduce condensation.

If possible:

  • keep a low background heat on during the day rather than heating your home fully for short periods
  • heat rooms you use most and keep doors closed to retain warmth
