Sexual violence, including rape, is a non-consenting sexual act.
Examples of sexual violence include:
- forced vaginal, oral, or anal sex
- non-consensual penetration by objects
- flashing or sexual exposure
- sexual harassment (verbal, phone calls, texts or e-mail)
- forced or coerced into watching or taking part in pornography
- being prostituted, sexually touched and spied on during private acts
Sexual violence can be a one-off incident or something that happens repeatedly. In most cases, these assaults are carried out by someone known to the victim – a partner, ex-partner, friend, family member or colleague.

Rape Crisis Scotland has a helpline - they can be contacted on 08088 01 03 02, seven days a week, 6pm to 12am.
