Minor adaptations are provided free of charge and are something that can be easily fitted at your home. This could be grabrails, external rails or additional banisters, for example.
We will assess whether they are needed to increase your safety or independence at home. Sometimes, walking equipment or physiotherapy are the better option.
We'll arrange for minor adaptations to be fitted if you live in a private or council property. Banisters, external rails, and grabrails are not removed once fitted.
If you live in a Housing Association property, we'll send them a recommendation to carry out the work.
You or your landlord may need to provide rails or banisters:
- where there isn’t a first rail for general safe use
- where the stairs only lead to non essential rooms
- if you need to use steps to get into a garden for leisure only
If you feel you may need an adaptation, an assessment will be required from the Community Occupational Therapy Service.
