The UK Government is responsible for the funding, placement and accommodation of people seeking asylum.
No council tax funding, or any other kind of Council funding, is used to pay for the accommodation or placement of asylum seekers. It is funded by the UK Government alone.
No asylum hotels operate in Fife.
If any setting was under consideration for use as asylum accommodation, the Home Office and its partner Mears Group plc would consult our Local Authority, with input provided from key Council services and Police Scotland. While our stakeholder response will be considered, Fife Council cannot veto proposals made, and any decision to proceed sits with the Home Office and Mears.
Fife Council does not hold information about asylum seekers accommodated or living in the local area.
Freedom of Information requests relating to the accommodation of asylum seekers should be directed to the UK Government. Information about how to make a request is available on the How to make a freedom of information (FOI) request: Overview - GOV.UK.
If an asylum seeker receives a positive asylum decision, they become eligible for public funds and can request housing assistance from a Local Authority of their choosing.
Locally, standard housing options and the prevention of homelessness process would be followed, with a homeless assessment carried out if necessary. No additional or separate prioritisation is given, and all normal processes would apply.
