Access to free period products

Period products can be costly, and we know many households are under financial pressure. No one should have to worry about affording these essential items.

The Scottish Government’s Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Act 2021 requires all local authorities to make period products easy to access at no cost. This means anyone can get them for free, no matter their income.

Our aim is to make sure people can access products in a respectful and private way. We also want to reduce the stigma around periods by raising awareness, promoting menstrual health and wellbeing, and helping tackle period poverty.

If you’re finding it hard to manage financially and need wider support as well as period products, visit our Cost of Living pages to find help available near you.

Where can I get free period products?

Products are available in lots of places across Fife and online. Anyone can take the products they need, you don’t have to be collecting them for yourself.

We've recently partnered with OnFife to provide products in libraries, theatres, museums and galleries across Fife. These locations offer both disposable and reusable products, such as period pants, pads and cups.

Accessing products through local services

Free period products are available from several local health services, including Sexual Health Clinics, Family Nurse Partnerships and Health Visitors. If you already use any of these services, just let them know if you need products.

Period products are also available at some community venues such as food banks, larders and community organisations.

You can pick up free period products in many other places across Fife, including:

  • public buildings
  • schools
  • some local community and third sector organisations
  • Fife Sports and Leisure Trust venues
  • Fife Coast and Countryside Trust venues
  • OnFife venues

You can use the PickUpMyPeriod app, created by the Scottish Government and Hey Girls, to find your nearest collection point anywhere in Scotland. The app is free to download on both Apple and Android devices. You can also request free period packs online from Hey Girls.

Order online

Through partnership with Hey Girls, you can order free period products online and have them delivered straight to your home. You can choose from disposable products or menstrual cups.

More information about free period products in Fife

Under the Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Act 2021, the Council must:

  • make sure period products are easy for people to get in both community locations and schools
  • ensure people can access products with dignity and without embarrassment
  • provide a reasonable range of different types of period products to choose from

We have to publish a Statement on the Exercise of Functions, explaining how we will meet these legal duties and how we plan to deliver this service. This statement will be reviewed and updated when needed.

We want to improve and expand access to free period products across Fife, so that provision meets people’s needs and is offered respectfully. If you are a third sector or community organisation and would like to get involved, email us at: period.products@fife.gov.uk
