Establishing a Community Council

If a community council is not established at an ordinary election, and there is no active community council in your area, local residents can ask for one to be set up. This is done by sending a petition to Fife Council.

Who can sign the petition

The petition must be signed by at least 20 people who:

  • live in the community council area, and
  • are registered to vote in local government elections

How to submit a petition

Once your petition is complete, you must return it to the Returning Officer.

You can do this by:

Email

Post

Returning Officer Fife Council
North Street
Glenrothes

What happens next

When Fife Council receives your petition:

  • we will check that it meets the legal requirements
  • an interim election will be arranged for your area
  • if enough people stand for election, the community council will be established
