Young people from Pitreavie Primary School in Dunfermline are striking a chord for safer streets after being named winners of a Fife-wide road safety song challenge.
Primary schools from across the Kingdom were invited to take part in the creative competition organised by Fife Council’s Roads and Transportation Services and supported by SEStran, which encouraged pupils to write and perform their own original songs promoting safe and active travel.
Entries flowed in from schools of all sizes, each demonstrating impressive imagination, teamwork and enthusiasm for keeping local communities safe.
And after careful consideration, a panel of judges selected Pitreavie Primary School as the overall winner.
Their upbeat and memorable song stood out for its strong safety messages, catchy lyrics and confident performance - all created by the pupils themselves.
As part of their prize, the winning pupils were given the exciting opportunity to visit a professional recording studio, where they recorded their track with support from experienced sound engineers.
The project was brought to life even further through the production of a full music video, featuring the pupils in animation form and reinforcing key road safety messages.
Debbie Broadley, Headteacher at Pitreavie Primary School, said: “We are incredibly proud of our pupils for their creativity, confidence and commitment to promoting road safety.
“This project has been a fantastic opportunity for them to learn important life skills while working together and expressing themselves.
“Seeing their ideas transformed into a professionally recorded song and video has been a truly memorable experience for everyone involved.”
Pitreavie’s song - ‘Frankie’s Road Safety Anthem’ - focused on Fife Council’s School Travel Plan mascot Fresh Air Frankie, and highlighted the sterling efforts of Frankie’s Active Campaigners Team - or FACT for short.
Schools across Fife have created groups of children that work hard to encourage parents to change their behaviours towards active travel by running campaigns such as Bike to School Week, Walk to School Week, Road Safety Week and Clean Air Day.
During these campaigns schools are competing against each other to win Fresh Air Frankie Awards and the Annual Award for most active school.
To celebrate the launch of their song, staff and pupils at Pitreavie Primary held a special assembly where they were visited by Fresh Air Frankie and representatives from Fife Council including Provost Jim Leishman.
Councillor Cara Hilton, Fife Council’s Education Spokesperson, was also on hand to congratulate the school on its efforts.
“This initiative is a brilliant example of how we can engage young people in important messages about road safety and active travel in a fun and meaningful way,” she said.
“The pupils at Pitreavie Primary School have done an outstanding job, and their song will help inspire other children and families across Fife to make safer, healthier choices when travelling to school.”
The final song and video will now be shared with schools, families and communities across Fife, supporting ongoing work to encourage children and young people to walk, wheel or cycle safely to school.
Marta Ramage and Trudy Brown of Fife Council’s School Travel Planning Team would like to thank all the pupils of the FACT group at Pitreavie Primary and their teacher Elizabeth Coggane for all their hard work, time and creativity.
They were a pleasure to work with and we wish them all the very best on their journey up to High School.
Their legacy will live on through the strong message they are leaving to all schools in Fife about the importance of road safety and active travel to school.
Huge thanks also to Loopmaniac studios and Simplicity for producing the song and video.
