Bulky uplift service

We offer a free service to collect bulky household items that are too big to fit into a wheeled bin and cannot be transported to one of our recycling centres.

Is the item worth being reused?

Reusing waste is better than recycling because it:

  • saves the raw materials and energy needed to make a new one
  • is one less item to transport

Pass it on - Furniture charities, charity shops, and the community

Furniture reuse organisations such as Furniture Plus or Castle Furniture will collect reusable furniture items free of charge from your house and prepare them for reuse.

Charity shops also take a wide range of goods for reuse and you can pass on and collect items for free from some online websites. You can find out more details at the links below (these will take you to external websites).

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) - Free Bulky Collection Service

On 31st January 2024, new legislation from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) came into effect, regarding the storage and disposal of waste upholstered domestic seating containing Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). POPs are poisonous chemical substances that break down slowly and get into food chains.

In the past, POPs were used in various products, including pesticides and industrial chemicals, and released during chemical and agricultural processes. The manufacture, sale, and use of products containing POPs is now banned.

This legislation affects the way we collect and store materials that may contain POPs. Changes have been made to the way our waste streams that may contain POPs are collected. Changes have also been made to the way this waste is stored and processed. We've put their own changes in place to ensure the safe disposal and incineration of waste that may contain POPs at our sites.

Items That May Contain POPs

Waste domestic seating - household seating that includes any part made of, or containing, leather, synthetic leather, other fabric, or foam. Below is a list of common upholstered domestic seating that may contain POPs:

  • Armchair
  • Armchair (Recliner)
  • Chair upholstered (Not Armchair)
  • Couch – Non-Recliner or Corner Couch
  • Couch - Recliner
  • Garden Furniture Upholstered
  • Pouffe
  • Sofa Bed
  • Stool Upholstered

Bulky Collections Containing POPs

You will now have to tape up any items that may contain POPs, that are damaged, ripped, or torn. If possible, you should cover them with non-returnable sheeting or a tarp when they are presented at kerbside for collection.

Has your collection been missed?

If you think your collection has been completely or partially missed and it is now after 9pm on your collection date, use the “Missed Bulky Collection” form to inform us.

Once you have reported a Missed Bulky Collection we aim to return for your items within five working days. Please leave them at the original pick-up location. If there is a known reason for your items not being uplifted, a member of our team will contact you.

Need to cancel your Bulky Uplift booking?
