Update on Lower Melville Woods waste centre fire

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service continue to work on the site to extinguish the fire, with the help of staff from Cireco, who have provided a 24 hour presence to assist SFRS.

Wind conditions since the fire started have made the operation more difficult and, as operators move waste impacted by fire, more pockets of fire open up. A fire break was put in place to protect local forestry and significant progress has been made towards bringing the incident to a close.

Staff from the Ladybank recycling centre are working at Cupar recycling centre so that it can open 7 days a week to support local communities.

Residents should continue to keep windows and doors closed and remain inside, if their local area is being affected by smoke from the fire at Lower Melville Woods and follow advice from NHS Fife. There is no indication of any long-term health effects for the wider public at this stage and the risk to public health continues to be assessed as being low.

Waste collections

Bin collections and bulky uplifts continue as normal across Fife. More waste is being transferred to Lochhead but that site is still operating within permitted levels. We have additional staff there working to process the extra waste.

Roads

The A92 in Fife has reopened but the U103, the local access road to the recycling centre, will remain closed. This situation may change if winds change direction or speed in the coming days and drivers should continue to take care in the immediate area around the fire.
