A wide-ranging summer programme of activities has been agreed to support children, young people and families across the Glenrothes area during the school summer holidays.
Councillors at the Glenrothes Area Committee have approved just over £34,000 funding to support the Community Learning and Development (CLD) Summer Programme, which will run throughout the summer.
The programme builds on several years of similar work that has shown strong positive results, with more young people and families taking part each year.
This year’s programme will include a mix of free activities, family events and targeted support, designed to make sure everyone can take part, especially those who may need extra help.
Planned activities include:
- Weekly ‘Summer in the Park’ family events at the Lomond Centre
- Holiday clubs and sports activities for children and young people
- Outdoor and youth diversion activities
- Support for young people moving from primary to secondary school
- Family cooking sessions and learning activities
- Trips and community-based activities across the area
Many of the activities will also include food in partnership with Café Inc, helping make sure children and young people have access to healthy meals during the holidays.
The programme has been shaped by feedback from young people and builds on strong partnership working between Fife Council and local organisations, including schools, community groups, such as Gilvenbank Sports Hub, and third sector partners including Fife Gingerbread and Home Start.
This joined-up approach is one of the key lessons from previous programmes – showing that working together locally helps reach more people and deliver better outcomes.
The summer holidays can be a difficult time for some families, particularly with the ongoing cost-of-living pressures. The programme aims to provide safe spaces, positive activities and support, helping young people stay active, build confidence and stay connected.
While this is a positive step, it is recognised that demand for support continues to grow, and partners will continue to work together to make sure programmes like this reach those who need them most.
Councillor John Beare, Convener of the Glenrothes Area Committee, said: “This programme is a really important part of how we support children, young people and families over the summer.
“It’s great to see the range of activities on offer and the strong partnership working behind it. We’ve learned from previous years what works well, and this programme builds on that.
“We know the school holidays can be challenging for some families, so making sure there are opportunities to take part in activities, stay active and access support is more important than ever.”
The programme will run throughout the summer holidays, with activities taking place across Glenrothes.
