The much-anticipated refurbished play area has re-opened in Star of Markinch, with local primary children celebrating the occasion.
Funded by Fife Council, Scottish Government, Section 75 developer contributions, the £140,000 refurbishment is the result of months of hard work supported by the generous efforts of the local community and various organisations.
Star Parent Council launched an inspiring campaign to raise additional funds to make the dream of a new playpark a reality. In March 2025, they asked local residents to help choose the final design. Two options were shared on social media, and the local community were able to vote and share their views. Star of Markinch Primary School pupils also had their say and helped select the winning design. Over 70 people took part in the consultation and the final design, which is suitable and accessible for all and takes on board their suggestions and choices. In August 2025, members of Glenrothes Area Committee committed £10,000, securing the full final budget for the project.
The new design is made up of a variety of equipment which will mean there will be something suitable and accessible for everyone, including a cableway, four-tower multiunit, forest bug seesaw, double bay swing including an inclusive seat and you & me seat, a carousel with seats and a snail springer .
Councillor Linda Erskine, Spokesperson for Communities, said: "This play area is a great example of what can be achieved when the community pulls together. The play area committee and local people have done an amazing job, and it's fantastic to see the results. This park will be a special place for local families for years to come.”
Star Parent Council sought input and support from the community, organising a series of fundraising events that brought people together for a common cause. Highlights included a coffee and cake afternoon at the school whilst in August, a number of children and their families took part in a 5k Inflatable fun run which raised quite a substantial amount of money for the project.
Local and national organisations also stepped up, with generous donations from the Fernie Trust and Fife Environment Trust.
Convener of the Glenrothes Area Committee, Councillor John Beare added: "It’s a pleasure to be here at the official opening of this fantastic new play area, which has been made possible through the incredible partnership between the council and our local community. This project highlights the power of collaboration – with input from families and support from local groups, we've created a space that truly reflects the needs and aspirations of those who live here. We're proud to have worked together to provide a safe, fun, and accessible space where children can play and grow, and we look forward to seeing it enjoyed by families for many years to come."
Claire Fraser from Star Parent Council, concluded: “We are absolutely thrilled that the new play park is finally open. This project has been in the making since November 2024 and thanks to the incredible generosity, and support of local families, residents and community partners, we’re delighted to see it become a reality. We can’t wait to see it enjoyed by families from across the village and would like to thank everyone who contributed to making this possible.”
The new Star play area is a brilliant example of community spirit and teamwork, creating a fun and safe space for everyone to enjoy.
