Fife Council has been transforming Kirkcaldy’s waterfront over recent years, creating new reasons for people to visit the town's seafront, with a mix of art, heritage features, interactive experiences and family-friendly attractions now in place along the promenade.
Whether you’re local to the area or visiting for the day, there’s plenty to discover along the prom. From public art and interactive features to local history and play activities, there's something for all ages to enjoy.
Visitors can stop by the Heart of Kirkcaldy, snap a selfie beneath the iconic sculpture and share it with friends and family. Nearby, the sundial celebrates the life and work of Sir Sandford Fleming, the Kirkcaldy-born engineer and inventor known as the original “Time Lord.” Interpretation plaques along the route also help tell the story of the area's landscape, heritage and coastal views.
The town's proud linoleum heritage is also reflected throughout the seafront improvements, with decorative lino-inspired patterns incorporated into different sections of the promenade, celebrating the industry that not only helped to floor the world but also put Kirkcaldy on the map.
Art lovers can admire the striking whale mural, a colourful addition that celebrates the town's longstanding connection to the sea.
Families can get involved too, with a range of games and activities built into the route. Why not play a game of hopscotch, see how far you can jump, or challenge local darts legend Jocky Wilson? The much-loved Links Market hobby horse also provides a fun opportunity for children and families. Many of the interactive features can be explored through the Heartlands of Fife app, helping bring Kirkcaldy’s stories and heritage to life as you walk along the waterfront.
The free Heartlands of Fife app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and Google Play, giving visitors access to trails, stories and interactive content from across the area.
Together, these features create a welcoming and enjoyable experience for residents and visitors, encouraging people to spend more time along the waterfront and supporting the wider town centre. The improvements form part of ongoing efforts to make the most of Kirkcaldy's seafront by creating an attractive destination that celebrates the town's heritage while creating new experiences for people of all ages.
Councillor Ian Cameron, Convener of the Kirkcaldy Area Committee, said: "Kirkcaldy's prom has so much to offer, and these improvements help showcase the very best of our waterfront.
"There's something for everyone, whether you're interested in local history, public art, family activities or simply enjoying the views across the Forth.
"The waterfront is a great place to spend time with family and friends, and I’d encourage people to download the Heartland of Fife app and discover some of the stories, heritage and interactive experiences that make Kirkcaldy such a special place.”
Whether you're visiting for the first time or rediscovering the area, there's plenty to explore along Kirkcaldy's waterfront.
