Members of the North East Fife Area Committee have agreed a programme of investment to improve local roads, pavements, and travel safety across communities from Tay Bridgehead to the East Neuk.

The 2026–27 Area Roads Programme sets out more than £2.3 million of road resurfacing, £320,000 of footway upgrades, and £157,000 for road safety and traffic management measures. The programme also includes planned work on street lighting, bridges, and a range of active travel improvements.

This follows discussions with local councillors, community feedback and technical assessments, ensuring investment goes where it will make the biggest difference to residents.

Cllr Jonny Tepp, Convenor of the North East Fife Area Committee, said: “Residents tell us time and again how important safe, well‑maintained roads and pavements are to daily life. Even with the financial pressures facing councils everywhere, we are committed to investing in North East Fife’s local infrastructure.

“This programme focuses on the places where improvements will have the greatest impact, making it easier and safer for people to travel, walk and cycle in their own communities.These planned works are essential to keep our neighbourhoods safe and accessible, and to make sure our roads and footways stay in good condition for years to come.”

Projects councillors have agreed to invest in includes:

• Major resurfacing on key local routes, including roads in Guardbridge, St Michaels, Leuchars, Crail and rural parts of the area
• Footway improvements in communities including St Andrews, Elie, Crail and Cupar
• Road safety measures such as new or upgraded crossings, vehicle‑activated signs, and traffic‑calming projects in St Andrews, Guardbridge, St Michaels, Anstruther, Cupar, and Craigrothie
• Street lighting upgrades, particularly in Anstruther, Crail and St Andrews
• Bridge and structure work in Guardbridge and Kemback
• Active travel projects, including design and feasibility work to support walking and cycling routes across North East Fife

Members noted that while budgets remain challenging, this investment represents a significant commitment to maintaining safe and accessible local infrastructure.
