Young people across Fife are set to benefit from a major £840,000 funding boost as part of a £20 million national drive to get more children and young people active.
The investment, secured by Fife Council in partnership with sportscotland, will deliver a wide range of free and low-cost sporting opportunities during the 2026 Summer of Sport.
Funded by the Scottish Government and delivered nationwide, the initiative aims to give more young people aged three to 26 the chance to get involved in activities on their doorstep — and try something new. From grassroots sessions to new experiences, the programme is designed to remove barriers and help more young people across Fife get active.
Fife Council is working with partners, including Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, to ensure these opportunities are available to everyone, regardless of background.
The £840,000 funding allocation for Fife will deliver and expand the reach of activities to help young people develop healthy habits, build stronger social connections, and foster a lifelong love of movement.
This summer, it’s game on, and the 2026 Summer of Sport is a unique opportunity for communities across Scotland to embrace the excitement of sport, inspired by the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, both of which will showcase Scotland on the global stage and inspire young people to take part, get active and begin their own journey in sport and activity.
With activities running throughout the summer and beyond, young people will have access to a range of events, helping remove barriers to participation. Some of the physical activity opportunities for children and young people across Fife during summer 2026 through to March 2027 will include:
- Community Sport Hubs: Expanding local hubs to host multi‑sport sessions and family activity days.
- School‑based Programmes: Coordinated delivery through Active Schools to ensure every pupil has access to summer sport opportunities.
- Inclusive Access Initiatives: Targeted outreach for young people with disabilities, low‑income families, and under‑represented groups.
- Club and Trust Partnerships: Collaboration with sports clubs, Fife Sport & Leisure Trust, and community organisations to provide coaching, facilities, and volunteer support.
- Youth Leadership and Training: Developing young leaders through coaching and event‑management roles to build skills and confidence.
- Festival and Showcase Events: Regional “Summer of Sport” celebration days highlighting participation and community achievement.
Councillor Linda Erskine, Fife Council’s Spokesperson for Communities said: “We’re proud to support the 2026 Summer of Sport and bring exciting, accessible activities to more young people in Fife. This is a fantastic opportunity for children and young people to try something new, get active, and experience the joy of physical activity, whether it’s through sport, outdoor events, or community-based activities. Our goal is to make new and our existing opportunities available to everyone, regardless of background.”
Fife Council is working to ensure that the 2026 Summer of Sport positively influences as many young people as possible, fostering engagement in sport and outdoor activities across all communities.
Chief Executive of sportscotland, Forbes Dunlop, added: “At sportscotland, we believe that sport has the power to strengthen communities and change lives. The 2026 Summer of Sport campaign, made possible by Scottish Government investment, is a great example of what can be achieved when partners come together with a shared ambition to make sport more inclusive and accessible. We’re proud to play our part in helping more young people enjoy the benefits of being active as we celebrate a fantastic summer of sport.”
