The City of Dunfermline Area Committee has approved Bruce Square as the name for the new city square.
The city square sits in the heart of Dunfermline and has been a development priority for many years. Once work is complete, it will make the area more attractive and welcoming and help build a stronger local identity.
Local people at various stages have helped with choosing a name and in the end ninety‑six young people whittled it down to one. Bruce Square received steady support and linked strongly with Dunfermline’s heritage.
Cllr Gordon Pryde, vice convener of the area committee welcomed the decision, saying: “This is great news for Dunfermline. Bruce Square will give people a new space to enjoy in the city centre and it shows that real progress is happening.
“I’m pleased that young people helped shape this decision; their views have guided this important project.”
Bruce Square will be a flexible public space for events and community activity. The work will link with the city centre strategy and investment programme.
The committee also agreed to spend £30,000 to look at early ideas for improving public spaces. This money will help explore ways to make these areas easier to use, move around and enjoy.
Cllr Pryde added: “The £30,000 agreed today will help important early work move forward and will support better public spaces. This investment will help us plan for a stronger and more vibrant Dunfermline.”
