Glenrothes Area Committee Convener pays tribute to artist David Harding

Glenrothes has lost one of its most visionary and influential figures with the passing of David Harding, the town’s first and most celebrated Town Artist.

His pioneering approach to site‑specific public art transformed everyday spaces into places of meaning, creativity, and pride. Works such as Henge, Industry, and Heritage remain woven into the fabric of Glenrothes, reminding us of his belief that art should be part of daily life for everyone. His contributions continue to shape the town’s cultural landscape, ensuring that his impact will be felt for generations. Series of totem poles - artwork by David Harding

Glenrothes Area Committee Convener, John Beare, said: “David Harding’s creativity, imagination and commitment to public art helped shape Glenrothes into the town we know today. His work brought art into the heart of our community, transforming everyday surroundings into places of meaning and identity. David’s legacy lives on in the pieces that residents pass every day, many without realising just how influential and pioneering he was. He will be deeply missed, but the mark he has left on Glenrothes will remain for generations to come.”

We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends, and we honour the legacy he leaves behind which will continue to inspire.
