The City of Dunfermline Area Committee has agreed to provide £10,000 to help launch a new men’s substance support group, delivered by Touch Trust.
The group will operate from Abbeyview Community Hub and aims to tackle the growing need for community-based support for men affected by substance use. Recent figures show that Abbeyview has some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug-related emergency attendances in Fife, with men most at risk. In 2024/25, alcohol-related attendances in Abbeyview were 1,200 per 100,000, compared to 700 in Fife, and drug-related attendances for Abbeyview males were 500 per 100,000, significantly higher than the Fife average.
The new project will provide:
- Weekly men’s sessions offering peer support, group discussion and practical advice.
- Monthly activities chosen by participants, such as walking, cooking or creative sessions.
- One-to-one check-ins and informal support between sessions, alongside training in harm reduction and suicide prevention.
The group will have no referral criteria, making it accessible to any man seeking connection, support or improved wellbeing.
Cllr James Calder, Area Convener, said: "This funding will make a real difference for men in our community. By creating a safe, welcoming space, we can help prevent crisis situations, reduce harm and improve mental health. It’s about giving people the support they need, when they need it."
Touch Trust have also secured funding from Fife Voluntary Action’s Community Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund.
