Support for people struggling with high energy costs in the Glenrothes area will continue for another year, helping households stay warm and manage their bills.
Councillors at the Glenrothes Area Committee have agreed to extend funding for the local fuel poverty support service delivered by St Andrews Environmental Network (StAndEN) until March 2027.
The service has already made a real difference across the area. Since April 2023, it has supported around 480 households, offering advice, practical help and access to other financial support.
This has helped local people get more than £100,000 they were entitled to, including support with energy bills and wider money advice.
The service focuses on reaching those most in need, with outreach work taking place across communities and face-to-face support available. Demand for help has increased, particularly during the winter months.
The Glenrothes area continues to be one of the areas in Fife most affected by fuel poverty, with seven of the 12 highest-risk areas located in Glenrothes.
Many households also need ongoing support. Around one in four people using the service require repeat help, often due to more complex issues such as energy debt or problems with heating systems.
Continuing the funding will allow the locally based energy advisor to remain in place, making sure support is available across all parts of the Glenrothes area during the coming year.
While this is positive progress, challenges remain. Demand for support is growing, and many households are still dealing with rising energy costs and wider cost-of-living pressures.
Councillor John Beare, Convener of the Glenrothes Area Committee, said: “This support is making a real difference for people across the Glenrothes area, helping households manage their energy costs and access the help they need.
“We know many people are still facing real pressures, particularly when it comes to heating their homes. That’s why it’s important we continue to support services like this and make sure help is available to those who need it most.
“Extending this funding allows us to build on what’s already been achieved and continue supporting communities across the Glenrothes area.”
The continued funding will help make sure support is in place year-round, including over the winter when demand is highest.
