Leslie Primary School took to the outdoors this week as pupils completed their Daily Mile with a very special guest - Fresh Air Frankie, Fife Council’s active travel mascot - helping to kick off this year’s Big Walk and Wheel challenge.
The school is one of 50 schools across Fife taking part in the two‑week national event, which encourages pupils to walk, wheel, scoot, or cycle to school and stay active throughout the day.
The initiative aims to promote healthier travel habits, reduce congestion around school gates, and inspire lifelong physical activity.
Fresh Air Frankie joined pupils on the school grounds for a lively Daily Mile session, cheering them on as they ran, jogged and walked their way around the course.
Staff at Leslie Primary School said Frankie’s visit helped boost excitement and motivation, with pupils enthusiastically embracing the challenge.
“The children loved having Fresh Air Frankie join them today,” said Headteacher Michelle McLean.
“The Big Walk and Wheel is a fantastic opportunity to promote active travel, and taking part as a whole school brings a real sense of community and fun.”
Across Fife, schools are logging their active journeys each day, with classes competing for top spots locally and nationally.
Many are also hosting supporting activities such as walking buses, bike breakfasts, scooter skills sessions, and Daily Mile events.
Jane Findlay, Fife Council’s Lead Consultant for Climate Change and Partnerships, praised the enthusiasm shown across the region:
“It’s brilliant to see so many schools - 50 in total - committing to the challenge this year,” she said.
“Leslie Primary School has shown fantastic energy, and Fresh Air Frankie was thrilled to join their Daily Mile to encourage active, healthy travel choices.”
The Big Walk and Wheel continues throughout the two‑week period, and Leslie Primary School pupils are already looking forward to completing more active journeys and climbing the leader board.
