Fife Council celebrates successful engineering internship programme

Three engineering students have completed a 12-week summer internship with Fife Council’s Roads and Transportation Services, gaining practical experience across a diverse range of local authority engineering work.
The programme was developed to give students a positive introduction to careers in local government and demonstrate the important role engineers play in serving Fife’s communities, businesses and visitors.
During their placements, Rachael, Mia and Monty gained insight into the management and maintenance of Fife’s 2,500km road network, bridge design, flood and coastal protection, and the delivery of passenger transport and active travel services. The programme combined office-based learning with practical experience on sites across Fife.

John Mitchell, Head of Roads and Transportation Services at Fife Council, said: “I’m delighted to have arranged what I hope will be the first of many successful summer internship programmes for aspiring engineers within Fife Council’s Roads and Transportation Services.

“Our aim was to provide the students with a positive experience of local authority work and an understanding of the important contribution our services make to communities, businesses and visitors across Fife.

“Rachael, Mia and Monty have been terrific throughout their time with us. I hope the experience has helped them develop their knowledge and skills, while encouraging them to consider local government as a rewarding career in engineering.

“We wish them every success for the future and hope we may have the opportunity to welcome them back to Fife Council.”

Reflecting on his placement, Monty said: “Working in the Structures team at Fife Council has been a great experience. It is very rewarding to help improve the local community and to be exposed to a wide range of projects through both site-based and office work.”

Mia said: “My time with Fife Council has been a great first experience of the civil engineering profession. I’ve particularly enjoyed getting out on site and seeing the practical work taking place throughout Fife. I hope to continue learning about this side of engineering.”

Rachael added: “This summer at Fife Council has been a valuable and insightful experience. Everyone has been very welcoming and supportive, creating an environment where we have been able to learn and develop skills that will help us in the future.”

The internship programme forms part of Roads and Transportation Services’ commitment to supporting the next generation of engineers and promoting the varied career opportunities available within local government.
