Members of the Cowdenbeath Area Committee have agreed to invest in a major programme of improvements to local roads, pavements and street lighting as part of the 2026–27 area roads programme.

The approved programme sets out more than £700,000 of carriageway resurfacing, £260,000 of footway upgrades, and a further package of road safety, traffic management, street lighting, and bridges and structures works across Cowdenbeath, Kelty, Crossgates, Lochgelly, Cardenden and Benarty.

The decision follows discussions with local councillors, community feedback, and technical assessments to ensure investment is targeted where it will make the biggest difference to residents. Projects include resurfacing on key local routes, neighbourhood footway upgrades and safety improvements near schools and busy pedestrian areas.

Cllr Alex Campbell, Convener of the Cowdenbeath Area Committee said:“Roads and pavements are something we hear about from our communities regularly. Even with increasingly challenging budgets, we’re committed to investing in the Cowdenbeath area’s roads, paths and lighting. These planned works are essential to keep our neighbourhoods safe and accessible, and to make sure our roads and footways stay in good condition for years to come.”

Projects councillors have agreed to invest in includes:

  • £708k for resurfacing of key carriageways, including Broad Street and rural routes near Mossmorran and Ballingry
  • £262k for footway improvements, including Beath View Road, Maxwell Crescent, Dalbeath Crescent and routes in Lochgelly
  • £109k for road safety and traffic management, including new pedestrian islands, school‑area safety works and traffic calming
  • A comprehensive programme of street lighting renewal, bridge works, and active travel design projects to support walking and cycling

Members noted that while budgets remain challenging, this investment represents a significant commitment to maintaining safe and accessible local infrastructure.

The full list of projects members have agreed is included in the report presented to the Cowdenbeath Area Committee on 4 February 2026 and can be viewed online at www.fife.gov.uk/committee/cowdenbeatharea
