Council meets with community at Freuchie Mill to discuss flooding prevention plans

Freuchie Mill

Fife Council has met with residents at Freuchie Mill to update them on progress on flood prevention measures in the area.

Michael Anderson, Service Manager for Structural Services at Fife Council said the council had made a commitment to keeping residents up to date with any progress being made: "The council remains committed to delivering a flood prevention scheme for Freuchie Mill. Today we shared a presentation with the local community outlining proposals, investigation and survey work carried out so far.

"Our preferred proposal involves installing a new box culvert through Freuchie Mill, as well as diverting the Mill Lade via a new open channel away from the affected area. However project delivery will depend on funding and access to private land.

"Current estimate project costs are around £3.5m but this will be refined as detailed design work starts in the next few months."

Environment spokesperson Cllr Jan Wincott commented: "We've already set aside £2.2m in our budget to help the residents of Freuchie Mill.

She added: “Unfortunately these residents are not alone and millions of pounds are needed to tackle problems across Fife which are often extremely complex because of land ownership and the different watercourses involved. However, we are working hard to try and alleviate problems in the worst hit areas, and we have invested in a number of flood studies to better understand local issues.

“That’s coupled with the fact that we are also a coastal authority and our coastal communities are also under pressure from erosion and flooding.”
