Volunteers from across Dunfermline were recognised for their outstanding contributions to local communities during National Volunteers’ Week.
We hosted our annual volunteer celebration on Wednesday 3 June at Abbeyview Community Hub. The event brought together volunteers and partner organisations to recognise the impact of volunteering across the city.
The event highlighted the difference volunteers are making in communities. It also shared inspiring stories from individuals who developed skills, built confidence and moved into employment through volunteering.
Among those sharing their journeys were young volunteers Logan Pick and Garry Wilson. Both began their involvement through Community Learning and Development (CLD) opportunities. Logan first volunteered with Food for Your Future before supporting Baldridgeburn Community Pantry and taking on a range of roles. Garry joined a CLD-run course which led to volunteering with Chow and Chat, Communi-TEA and community events. Their commitment and dedication have since led to both securing youth worker roles in Dunfermline. This demonstrates the positive impact volunteering can have on future opportunities.
Special Recognition Awards were presented to Mirka Trnkova and Catherine Gray. They were recognised for their contributions to Baldridgeburn Community Garden, Chow and Chat and wider activity. Both are long-standing volunteers at the garden, which has now developed into an independent group named West End Growers.
More than 50 people attended the event, including local councillors, Fife College representatives and council staff.
In his opening address, Area Convener Cllr James Calder said: “Dunfermline has an amazing array of individuals and organisations that really make our city through their volunteer efforts. Without their tireless work, we would all be much poorer for it, so it is only right that Fife Council recognises their efforts.
“As Area Convener, I want to say a massive thank you to each of the volunteers that give so much back to our communities.”
Provost Leishman presented volunteers with certificates and gift bags in recognition of their contribution. He said: “It was an honour to recognise the incredible contribution of volunteers across Dunfermline. Their dedication makes a real difference to our communities every day.”
The evening celebrated the dedication, commitment and community spirit of volunteers across Dunfermline. It also highlighted the vital role they play in supporting and strengthening local communities.
