Pupils across Fife were welcomed back to school today (Wednesday) for the start of the new school year. While children and young people returned to classrooms across the Kingdom, the day held particular significance in west Fife as former Inverkeithing High School pupils and staff officially began an exciting new chapter, arriving at the new Caledonia High School in Rosyth for the first time.
The £88 million school in Rosyth welcomed its first pupils as part of a phased return to the new campus, which replaces Inverkeithing High School and provides a modern, sustainable and inclusive learning environment for more than 1,600 young people.
Staff welcomed S1 pupils, S6 pupils and all young people attending the Enhanced Provision today (Wednesday 19 August), giving them the opportunity to be the first to experience the school's state-of-the-art facilities and settle into their new surroundings.
The phased return will continue on Thursday, when S4 and S5 pupils join the school community, before S2 and S3 pupils arrive on Friday to complete the transition.
The new school features flexible teaching spaces, enhanced digital learning facilities, improved support provision and modern indoor and outdoor areas designed to support learning, wellbeing and achievement. Built to Passivhaus principles, the building is also designed to significantly reduce energy consumption and support Fife Council's sustainability ambitions.
The opening of Caledonia High School marks the culmination of almost two years of construction work, which began in autumn 2024. Delivered by BAM Construction in partnership with Fife Council and hub East Central Scotland, the project reached completion in July 2026 when the keys to the new school were officially handed over to Fife Council. Since then, staff have been preparing the building ready to welcome pupils into their new learning environment.
Cllr Cara Hilton, Fife Council's Education Spokesperson said: "It’s been fantastic to see pupils arrive at Caledonia High School today and begin this exciting new chapter in such a remarkable learning environment.
"This school represents a significant investment in the future of our young people and the wider community. Seeing these outstanding facilities being used for the very first time brings to life the vision that has driven this project from the beginning.
"I'd like to thank everyone who has played a part in making today possible, including pupils, families, staff, our partners and the wider community. I wish all our young people every success as they begin their journey in their new school."
Graham Belford, Headteacher of Caledonia High School said: "Today has been a truly memorable day for our school community as we welcomed pupils into Caledonia High School for the first time.
"There has been a real sense of excitement throughout the building, with young people keen to explore their new surroundings and make the most of the opportunities these excellent facilities provide.
"I am incredibly proud of the work our staff have done to prepare for this move and support our pupils through the transition. We are looking forward to welcoming more year groups over the coming days and beginning this exciting new chapter together."
The opening of Caledonia High School marks a major milestone for education in west Fife and provides a modern learning environment that will support generations of young people for years to come.
The project forms part of Fife Council’s wider investment in school buildings across the region, delivered in partnership with The Scottish Government and Scottish Futures Trust.
