As we come to the end of the year, we want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible achievements of our young people and youth services across the Cowdenbeath area. Earlier this November, the community came together for the annual Yoscars – an inspiring event that recognises the hard work, creativity and commitment of local young people.
More than 300 young people, parents, partner organisations and local councillors gathered at Lochgelly Centre to honour individuals and youth groups who have made a positive impact in their communities. The evening showcased the efforts of local clubs and forums, from Kelty’s senior and junior youth clubs to vibrant groups in Lochgelly and Cardenden, alongside school-based programmes such as Jigsaw and Total Adventure. In total, over 300 certificates were awarded, including volunteer recognitions from the Primrose Trust and CACA Young Volunteer Awards, highlighting the dedication of young people who give their time to support local clubs.
The McKain Award, which honours the legacy of Mairi McKain – a much-loved community education worker whose impact continues to inspire – was awarded to Becky Bryson, a member of Cardenden Youth Forum and the Young Volunteers project, for her outstanding contribution to community life. Becky was unable to attend the event, so the award was presented on her behalf by Mairi’s sister, Kirstine Henderson, and her achievement was warmly recognised and celebrated by everyone involved.
Councillor Linda Erskine, Spokesperson for Communities, said:
“The Yoscars is one of the most uplifting events in our calendar. It’s a privilege to celebrate the talent, resilience and generosity of our young people. They are not just shaping their own futures – they’re helping to build stronger, more connected communities for everyone. Every certificate represents hours of effort and a commitment to making a positive difference, and that deserves recognition. As we reflect on the year, this event reminds us how vital youth services are in supporting and empowering young people across the Cowdenbeath area.”
Congratulations to all nominees and winners for their achievements. A short video capturing the energy and pride of the evening – including young people receiving their certificates – will be shared on our social media channels so the whole community can join in celebrating their success.
