New visitor centre at Abbot House to celebrate Dunfermline’s medieval heritage

Plans to create a new visitor centre and learning suite at Abbot House have secured funding from Area Committee. The project will bring Dunfermline’s rich medieval history to life in an accessible and engaging way.

The visitor centre will feature themed rooms that tell the story of Abbot House. Visitors will be welcomed with audiovisual presentations and large-print guides. Historic features such as a 1500s wall fresco and a 14th-century window will be on display.

Digital storytelling and sensory experiences will help overcome access challenges. These features will ensure that all visitors, including those with limited mobility, can enjoy the site.

The project supports key priorities in Dunfermline and across Fife. These include education, tourism, culture, city centre regeneration and community wealth building.

Committee agreed funding of £30,000 for the project.

Cllr James Calder, Convener of the City of Dunfermline Area Committee, said: “Abbot House is one of Dunfermline’s most treasured historic buildings. This project will help bring its story to life for residents and visitors alike.

“It’s a great opportunity to boost local tourism, support education and celebrate our city’s heritage in a way that’s inclusive and inspiring.”

The visitor centre is expected to boost footfall, attract new visitors and strengthen Dunfermline’s reputation as a cultural destination.
