Lochore Meadows Country Park is once again home to its much-loved historic train, following a challenging journey that saw its return delayed by several weeks.

Originally scheduled to be reinstated on 19 November as part of the new mining heritage display launch, the train had to be returned to storage due to technical issues with lifting equipment. Thanks to the perseverance, generosity and expertise of Smeaton Services Fife Ltd, the train was successfully brought back to the park on Friday 12 December, completing the vision for the heritage area beside the iconic Mary Pit Wheel.

The train’s return is a significant milestone for the country park as it strives to preserve its proud coal mining history. The train forms an integral part of the recent Save The Cage project which recently created an outdoor display of coal mining artefacts loaned by the National Mining Museum Scotland, including a miner’s cage, man-riding bogies, roof supports, and coal-cutting machinery—telling the story of life underground and honouring generations of miners and their families.

Cllr Alex Campbell, Convenor of the Cowdenbeath Area Committee, said:

Keith and Donna Brown from Smeaton Services Fife Ltd said:“The restoration of the train is personal to us both, as we were born and raised in Benarty and have many fond memories of the train. It’s restoration was a charitable gesture by us, but it would not have been possible without the generosity of other businesses, namely Williamson Haulage Ltd, Forsyth of Denny Ltd, Barrett Steel Scotland, Hy Spec Services Ltd, 3D Precision Engineering Ltd, Vantage Signs, and The Purvis Group. We are delighted the train is back in its rightful place in the park, and we hope the community enjoys it for years to come.”

The project was delivered in partnership with local heritage groups, Friends of the Lochore Meadows, community organisations, and Fife Council, with strong public support for preserving the region’s mining history.
