Dunfermline residents invited to join groundbreaking City Assembly

Recruitment for the Dunfermline New City Assembly officially begins today.

Letters are being sent to 9,000 households across Dunfermline - representing one third of all homes in the city - inviting residents to register their interest in joining the Assembly.

From those who respond, a lottery will select 35 participants who reflect the diverse demographic makeup of Dunfermline. These individuals will come together to help shape the future of their city.

Willie Sullivan, Director of Electoral Reform Society Scotland said: “We are really excited that the first steps of the Assembly are underway and happening in Dunfermline. Every person that lives here could add something to the work of the Assembly.

“If you get a letter – why not put yourself forward to be chosen? Help shape your hometown and show the world we can take democracy to the next level.”

The Assembly will meet across three weekends in early 2026 to explore the question:

We all want Dunfermline to be a great place to call home. As our city grows and develops, how do we continue to improve our community for today and tomorrow?

The Assembly’s recommendations will go to the City of Dunfermline Area Committee. They will be asked to consider and respond to the Assemblies’ ideas with details of how the Council will work with the community and other relevant partners to meet the recommendations.

Participants will receive £500 for their time. The project is endorsed by the Scottish Government and is being piloted by the Electoral Reform Society Scotland in partnership with Fife Council.

Cllr James Calder, Convener of the City of Dunfermline Area Committee added: “This is a fantastic opportunity for people in Dunfermline to have a direct say in shaping the future of our city. The Assembly will bring together voices from across our community and I encourage everyone who receives a letter to consider taking part.

"Your perspective matters and together we can build a better Dunfermline for generations to come.”
