Dunfermline celebrates 80 years of friendship with Trondheim

Dunfermline welcomed a delegation from Trondheim this week to mark the 80th anniversary of one of Europe’s longest-standing twinning partnerships.

The commemorative visit was a resounding success, filled with moments of reflection, celebration and renewed commitment to the enduring bond between the two cities.

The highlight of the visit took place on Wednesday 20 August at Pittencrieff Park, where a crowd gathered beside the Louise Carnegie Gates to witness the opening of a time capsule buried in 2000. The capsule revealed a fascinating glimpse into the past, with contributions from the community sparking memories and conversations about the shared journey of Dunfermline and Trondheim. The contents of the time capsule will go on display at Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries. Everyone attending the event was given the opportunity to write a message for including in the next time capsule, which will be opened during the centenary celebrations in 2045.

Provost Jim Leishman hosted a civic reception at the City Chambers, where the Bond of Friendship was reaffirmed in a ceremony attended by local dignitaries, members of the Dunfermline Trondheim Twinning Association and the visiting Norwegian delegation. The event celebrated not only the historical ties but also the cultural and economic exchanges that have enriched both communities over the decades.

Provost of Fife, Cllr Jim Leisham stated: “This anniversary has been a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our shared history and look ahead to future collaboration. The warmth and enthusiasm shown by both communities is a testament to the strength of our friendship.”

Throughout the visit, guests from Trondheim were taken on a tour of the city, visited Dunfermine Carnegie Library and Galleries, toured Dunfermline Learning Campus and attended a workshop, deepening connections and exploring opportunities for future exchanges.

Trondheim Vice Mayor, Erling Moe said: "We're thankful for the friendship since 1945 and are happy to celebrate the 80 years of bond between our two cities. Especially in times like these building friendships between peoples and communities are important."

The celebrations have reaffirmed the importance of international friendship and the value of cultural understanding. Dunfermline looks forward to continuing this special relationship with Trondheim for many years to come.
