Cowdenbeath Area Committee approves funds to support 'Learn to Swim' project in schools

Learn to swim

Cowdenbeath Area Committee is backing a project to make sure children in our local schools across the Benarty, Cardenden and Lochgelly area can learn to swim before leaving primary school.

The Learn to Swim programme was created after figures showed that more than a quarter of pupils in some schools couldn’t swim. Even though we have pools nearby, families told us that cost, transport, and access to equipment were real barriers.

A successful pilot which took place last year for pupils from Benarty and Lochgelly South Primary schools helped 30 pupils gain confidence in the water, and now the programme will expand to reach 140 children from schools across Ward 8. Lessons will take place during school hours, with transport and kit provided, so no child misses out.

The committee has agreed to provide just over £15,500 from the local community planning budget to support the project. The programme will be delivered by the council's Active Schools and Community Use Servic in partnership with Fife Sport and Leisure Trust, using Cowdenbeath Leisure Centre and other
local pools.

Cllr Alex Campbell, Area Committee Convenor, said:"Swimming is a vital life skill, and every child deserves the chance to learn it. This programme removes barriers for families and gives young people confidence and safety in the water. It’s a great example of how we can work together to support health, wellbeing, and equality in our communities."

The Learn to Swim programme supports the Plan for Fife’s “Opportunities for All” theme and helps tackle poverty and raise aspirations in the Cowdenbeath area.
