This year marks the 80th anniversary of the twinning between Dunfermline and Trondheim, a bond that has stood the test of time and continues to flourish.
Established in May 1945, the twinning began with the adoption of the Bond of Friendship during a ceremony in Dunfermline, attended by Norwegian sailors based at Rosyth.
The twinning between Dunfermline and Trondheim is not just a formal agreement; it is a testament to the deep connections and shared values between the two cities. Over the years, numerous exchange visits, cultural events, and collaborative projects have strengthened this bond. From the first group of young Norwegians visiting Dunfermline in 1946 to the establishment of the Dunfermline Trondheim Twinning Association in 1997, the relationship has grown.
For Dunfermline, the twinning with Trondheim has provided opportunities for residents to experience Norwegian culture, build international friendships and participate in exchanges. The twinning has also brought economic benefits, promoting tourism and business links.
Cllr James Calder, convener of the City of Dunfermline Area Committee, expressed his excitement about the upcoming celebrations: "The 80th anniversary of our twinning with Trondheim is a remarkable milestone and is one of the longest twinnings in Europe. This enduring relationship has brought immense cultural and economic benefits to Dunfermline.
“We look forward to welcoming our friends from Trondheim and celebrating our shared history and future together."
Later this month, a delegation from Trondheim will visit Dunfermline to commemorate the 80th anniversary. The visit will include events designed to celebrate our shared history and look forward to the future. Highlights will include the opening of the time capsule buried in Pittencrieff Park in 2000 and a civic reception hosted by Provost Jim Leishman reaffirming the Bond of Friendship.
Join us for a special moment in Dunfermline’s history as we, alongwith our visitors from Trondheim, open the time capsule on Wednesday 20 August 2025 at 2pm, beside the Louise Carnegie Gates. All are welcome to come along and see what treasures from the past have been preserved and share in the twinning celebrations.
