Crossgates - Active Travel path extension (B981)

Stage Status: Construction (relocation of services and new path installation)

A new active travel path between Fordell Firs and Crossgates was constructed along the B981 in 2021. It stopped just short of the landscaped area opposite the football ground in Crossgates. At the time, there were requests for the path to be extended further into the Crossgates, but, unfortunately, subsurface services prevented this from happening.

We have now concluded our dialogue with BT engineers and it is hoped that BT will be able to modify their layout during the winter of 2023/24. Once undertaken, this will enable our contractor to start construction of the path extension, with a view to completion by spring 2024.

The existing two planters on the east side of the road will be relocated, possibly to the other side of the road. Community feedback will be sought regarding any preferences.

  • Timeline: The construction work is scheduled to be completed by spring 2024.
  • Distance: 250m approx.
  • Approximate infrastructure investment: £70,000
  • Key features:
    • A new shared pedestrian/ cycle track, approx. 3.0m wide, plus a 500mm safety strip
    • Potential to extend the path further in the future
