Report an issue with a short-term let
If you're unhappy about a short-term let, you can let us know.
Before a short-term let has been granted
You can object to a short-term let by filing a representation.
Any member of the public may make representations about an STL licence application. We cannot accept representations for transfers of a STL licence holder, as these applications have already been approved.
Representations must:
- be in writing
- specify the grounds of the objection and/or the nature of the representation
- set out the name and address of the person making it
- must be signed by the person, or on their behalf
- be made within 28 days of public notice of the application being given
Copies of any representations will be shared with the applicant.
If we receive a representation after 28 days, but before our final decision, we may still consider it.
Representations should be sent by post or email to Fife Council.

After a short-term let has been granted
You can contact us to complain. This could be to report an unlicensed short-term let or let us know of an issue related to the short-term let.
Report an unlicensed short-term let
Before reporting an unlicensed short-term let, check the STL Public Register to see if an application for a licence has been made.
If it's not on the list, let us know by emailing shorttermlets@fife.gov.uk. We need:
- the address of the short-term let
- the operator (if known)
- any booking sites where the property is advertised
Your report will be investigated by the team.
It's a criminal offence to operate a STL without a licence. This is enforceable by Police Scotland, not the council.
Complaints from guests and neighbours for a licensed short-term let
You should speak to the host/operator, letting agent, or booking office in the first instance. If this cannot be resolved, let us know.
We can only deal with complaints within the scope of the licencing scheme, like a breach of licence conditions. We can not deal with complaints about the quality of your stay.
Contact shorttermlets@fife.gov.uk. We need the licensed short-term let address and any concerns you have. Examples of any contact you've made with the host/operator, letting agent, or booking platform would be helpful too.
We aim to acknowledge complaints within 5 working days.
Anti-social behaviour
If you are being disturbed in your home by noisy neighbours, you should contact the police on 101 when the noise is happening.
Further information can be found on our antisocial behaviour page.
