Broomhead estate comprises three 12 storey flatted blocks, with 216 flats in total. Housing & Neighbourhood Services investigated several options for this estate and took the bold decision to invest in a full refurbishment to regenerate Broomhead and to revive the community spirit experienced when the Estate was first occupied.

The original brief was to apply an EWI cladding system, provide better screening to walkways and investigate work to the balconies. The brief was further developed by including a replacement flat roof, the formation of a Communal Facility and the creation of two wheelchair accessible flats. In addition all windows were replaced with uPVC Windows to an A rated performance. A new entrance foyer area was also introduced to improve security.

All three blocks were completed with positive feedback received from the tenants. Early reports indicate a 30% energy consumption reduction. The retention of balconies by adding a ‘Windoor’ rain screen system has been especially welcomed by tenants who now have use of these areas all year round.
