Common Good Funds

Common Good Funds earn money each year from property rents and interest on investments and balances. We look after Common Good assets just like our other assets. The first priority for each Common Good Fund is to pay for the upkeep of its own assets.

Who can apply

Your project must have a community wide benefit.

We use agreed criteria to assess applications:

  • the value of each Common Good Fund should be protected over time
  • grants will normally cover no more than 50% of a project’s total cost

We may approve exceptions to these rules, but only in special circumstances.

You should complete this form and leave out sections that do not apply.

You must clearly show how your proposal will benefit the people living in the relevant former burgh.

You can apply throughout the year.

Who cannot apply

A grant from Common Goods Funds will not be approved for:

  • running costs on a recurring basis
  • grants for individuals for personal benefit

Eligible work

Grants are subject to funds being available. You must be able to demonstrate how your application will benefit the community in general.

Common Good Grants are currently delivered by Communities and Neighbourhood Area Teams. Applications can be submitted from:

  • external bodies
  • individuals
  • internal council services

Calculation of award

Applications go through an initial assessment by the Area Team to check that the proposal is eligible.

If your application meets the basic criteria of providing public benefit in the former burgh, it will go to a consultation. This is carried out with the relevant Community Council(s) and the Ward elected members.

Applications under £5000 are determined by Officers. Applications above £5000 are sent to the appropriate Area Committee.

This process normally takes between 2 and 3 months from receipt of an application to a decision being made.
