Register a stillbirth

A stillbirth occurring in Scotland must be registered within 21 days.

If the parents of the baby are married to each other, either parent can register the stillbirth.

If the parents of the baby are not married to each other, and the father's details are to be recorded on the certificate, both parents have to sign the register. If one of the parents can't come to do this, ask a registrar for advice by using the contact details below.

You will need to provide the following documents when you come to register the stillbirth:

  • Birth card or Form issued by the hospital or midwife

If possible please also provide:

  • Birth certificate(s) of parent(s)
  • Marriage certificate if the baby's parents are married

If some of these documents aren't available please speak to the registrar, who will be able to advise you.

Costs: There is no charge to register a stillbirth and you will be issued with a certificate free of charge.

Contact: Registration of births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships (lines open 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.)
