Age Restricted Sales

It's illegal for age restricted products to be sold to anyone below the age limit. A trader could be fined or prosecuted if found to be guilty of such an offence.

Trading Standards enforces the law on:

  • tobacco
  • tobacco products
  • nicotine vapour products (E-cigarettes and vaping devices)
  • butane gas lighter refills
  • fireworks
  • spray paints
  • DVDs and computer games
  • sunbed hire

The website businesscompanion.info contains free and impartial information, backed by the Government. It provides businesses with everything they need to know about trading standards and consumer protection legislation. Select the 'Scotland' option at the top of the page if you're trading in Scotland.

Enforcement

We investigate complaints about illegal sales of age restricted products. This can be reported using our form below.

We carry out test purchasing projects; this is where we recruit young volunteers to attempt to buy age restricted products. If you are 15 or 16 years old, and your parent or guardian would be happy for you to get involved with this, please contact us for further information.
